South Shore 1871: our founder Alvin Hollis was both a startup businessman and community servant. Back then, most everyone needed hay and grain. To reduce costs, Alvin built a railroad siding and purchased by the carload. Deliveries to homes and farms were by horse drawn wagons.Diversifying into heating and cooling, Alvin began offering firewood and ice. He purchased woodlots, built an ice house by Weymouth Great Pond and delivered year round to homes, farms and businesses. When coal replaced wood, Alvin and son-in-law Leonard Bicknell built a modern coal storage plant and used 'motorized' trucks for delivery. As coal powered systems advanced, we introduced 'Central Heating Systems' to the South Shore.Alvin Bicknell, Leonard's son, transitioned from coal to oil by installing many of the first 'automatic' heating systems in the state.Evolving from cutting hay to cutting edge HVAC's, we've served over 1 million South Shore customers. Give us a call! We'll love to serve you too. Meet the Business Owner Laura B. Business Owner Hi, I'm Laura Bicknell Carbone. My great-great grandfather made Alvin Hollis successful by treating our customers and employees just like family. Since 1871, we've built on that by keeping our South Shore neighbors safe and comfortable. Â Both my grandfather and father felt rewarded by our customers' smiles at their well engineered: heating, cooling and plumbing systems. As fifth generation, I feel that same reward.Starting part time as a teenager, I've worked in all aspects of our business. In 1991 I received a BS from St. Lawrence University. Since then I've enjoyed serving Alvin Hollis full time, specializing in Sales, Marketing and Customer Service. In 1995 I started cycling with my dad in the Pan-Mass Challenge bike-a-thon (together raising almost $800,000 for Dana Farber). I'm on the board of South Shore Chamber of Commerce and a Platinum Member of the President's Circle at South Shore Hospital. |
